Boris Johnson news – live: Right to buy plans unworkable, Labour says

The government’s plan to help people who receive housing benefits buy a home will not work because the details have been overlooked, shadow levelling up secretary Lisa Nandy has said.

Speaking on Sky News, she said: “In principle, it’s a great idea to try to get more people the security of their own home, particularly people who find themselves in the benefits system.

“The problem is that, as always, the government has not thought through the detail.”

Boris Johnson is expected to announce the policy today in a visit to Blackpool as he attempts to turn the political tide with a raft of new policies aimed at easing the housing crisis.

The prime minister was branded a “lame duck” as he faced MPs in the Commons for the first time since 41 per cent of his own party voted to oust him on Monday night.
