First Rwanda deportation flight set for next month as migrants to be given final notice

The first flight to Rwanda carrying asylum seekers deemed to have arrived in the UK illegally is scheduled to leave next month, the Home Office said.

Officials have started giving final notice to the first group of people to be handed a one-way ticket to the East African nation.

The Home Office is understood to have told dozens of individuals earlier in May that they were being considered for removal.

It is now handing out Removal Direction notices to tell people confirmed for deportation via the controversial new route when they will be removed.

The first flight is expected to set off on 14 June.

Home Secretary Priti Patel’s arrangement with the Rwandan government has no cap on the number of people who can be sent on the deportation flights. The Home Office said Rwanda has capacity to resettle tens of thousands of people in the coming years.

Home Office guidance says that removal to Rwanda should be considered for inadmissible asylum seekers if it “stands a greater chance” than removal to the country they are deemed to have a connection to.
