Sajid Javid has thrown his support behind Liz Truss as she and Rishi Sunak prepare to go head-to-head in the latest hustings in Cardiff this evening.
The former health secretary hit out at Mr Sunak in The Times, saying his plans for the economy would lead Britain “sleepwalking into a high-tax, low-growth” economy.
Mr Javid added that Ms Truss had the “willingness to challenge the status quo”.
It comes as a new poll found the former chancellor is trailing Ms Truss by a gap of 32 points.
The ConservativeHome poll of 1,003 Tory members found 58 per cent backed the foreign secretary, while 26 backed Mr Sunak.
