Yes, it’s that time of year again – the 2022 Oscars are finally upon us!
The Academy Awards are taking place at this very moment, with films including The Power of the Dog, West Side Story, Licorice Pizza and Coda battling it out in the big categories.
Already the biggest story of the night has occurred: a shocking altercation between Will Smith and Chris Rock sparked by a joke about Smith’s wife Jada. Smith walked up onto the stage and appeared to smack Rock in the face, before shouting at him to not refer to his wife again.
It will undoubtedly overshadow a night that saw – about half an hour later – Smith win the Best Actor Oscar for King Richard, in which he apologised to the Academy and spoke of his need to protect his family and his “people”.West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose alsowon Best Supporting Actress, giving an impassioned speech about sexuality, race and identity, while Troy Kotsur took home Best Supporting Actor for Coda, and made everyone tear up with his speech.
Elsewhere, Dune is hoovering up wins, taking home awards for Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Best Editing so far. Best Adapted Screenplay has gone to Coda and Best Original Screenplay went to Kenneth Branagh for Belfast.
