Boris Johnson — live: PM ‘certain’ to be forced from office if he lied to Commons

The chair of parliament’s privileges committee has said it is “absolutely certain” that Boris Johnson will be forced to resign if the cross-party panel finds he has misled the Commons.

Mr Johnson has resisted calls from Labour and some of his own MPs to step down following Wednesday’s release of the Sue Gray report, which detailed drunken parties at 10 Downing Street during the coronavirus lockdown.

The prime minister issued a televised apology over the scandal in an address to the nation after the report attacked “a serious failure” to abide by the “standards expected of the entire British population” during the pandemic, but stopped short of offering his resignation.

The findings of the report revealed events where staff did karaoke, partied until 4am, broke a child’s swing and displayed “unacceptable” behaviour toward cleaning and security staff as well as one individual getting sick due to “excessive alcohol consumption.”
