Liz Truss news – live: Hunt says new PM is ‘last thing people want’ as pressure mounts

The “last thing” British people want is a new prime minister, newly-appointed chancellor Jeremy Hunt said in an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg.

Pressure is mounting on PM Liz Truss – even from within her own party – over her government’s disastrous financial plans that led her to sack Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor after just weeks on the job.

Now Mr Kwarteng’s precedessor Mr Hunt said that the government will “do everything [it] can to protect struggling families, struggling businesses and the most vulnerable people” and insisted that Ms Truss has “changed”.

Earlier, Mr Hunt said that Ms Truss’s government went “too far, too fast” with its mini-Budget. The turmoil caused to the pound sterling and markets resulted in the reversal of a plan to cut taxes for the richest.

Meanwhile, opposition parties and unions have called on the Tories to hold a general election.

But Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey admitted that, given the state of the polls with the Conservative Party lagging behind Labour, it is unlikely that Ms Truss will do the “right thing” and call an election.
