Russia-Ukraine war news – live: Xi tells Putin they are ‘driving changes’ as Chinese leader heads home

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin looked to shaping a new world order as the Chinese president left Moscow on Wednesday, having made no direct support for the Russian president’s war in Ukraine during his three-day visit.

Mr Xi made a strong show of solidarity with Putin against the West, telling Mr Putin as he departed: “Now there are changes that haven’t happened in 100 years. When we are together, we drive these changes.”

“I agree,” Mr Putin said, to which the Chinese leader responded: “Take care of yourself dear friend, please.”

Ealier, the UK accused president Vladimir Putin of spreading deliberate disinformation after he claimed Britain was supplying Ukraine with “weapons with a nuclear component”.

Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu said there were fewer and fewer steps left before a potential “nuclear collision” between Russia and the West.

The Kremlin’s warning came after days of heightened tension following the downing of a US drone by a Russian jet. Foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov on Wednesday warned the US against escalation.
