Boris Johnson resigns – live: ‘Ship has sailed’ to oust PM as ‘no timeline’ for exit

Boris Johnson would be ousted straight away and Dominic Raab as the caretaker prime minister in an “ideal world” but “that ship has sailed”, according to the treasurer of the Tory backbencher committee.

“We must now live with the fact that Boris Johnson will be prime minister until a successor can be voted on,” Sir Geoffrey Clinton-Brown.

Mr Johnson is facing calls to leave Downing Street immediately after announcing he would be stepping down as prime minister but staying on until a new leader is chosen.

Labour’s Angela Rayner said Labour will call a no-confidence vote in the PM if the Conservative Party does not get rid of him immediately. “He hasn’t got the confidence of the house or the British public,” she said.

Meanwhile, the outgoing prime minister has not put a timeline on how long he will remain in No 10 after resigning, according to his new education secretary.
